Reconfiguração de Redes de Distribuição de Energia Elétrica Utilizando Aprendizado de Máquina

Reconfiguração de Redes de Distribuição de Energia Elétrica Utilizando Aprendizado de Máquina: Electrical networks are composed of stages of generation, transmission, and distribution of energy. Distribution networks (RD) are an important element of the electricity grid because it provides the effective delivery of energy to end users. The RD’s are subject to failure and their optimization is of fundamental importance in the context of Smart Grids, where it is sought a greater efficiency of the processes involved between the production and distribution of energy. The distribution networks (RD) have topologies and loads of various type. This dissertation proposes a method and algorithm for the reconfiguration of electrical network using machine learning with linear regression and branch exchange algorithm aiming the optimization of RD operation. The method and algorithm proposed do maneuvers in the RD as transfer and load balancing and aiming to increase its level of reliability. The proposal is validated in a test network of IEEE (IEEEbus14) using simulation and testing environment implemented in “R” language and using the Newton Raphson method to calculate the power flow. The solution developed show satisfactory in supporting the decision-making for three reconfigurations of distribution networks in the context of the Smart Grid.

Enhanced Pub/Sub Communications for Massive IoT Traffic with SARSA Reinforcement Learning

Enhanced Pub/Sub Communications for Massive IoT Traffic with SARSA Reinforcement Learning: Sensors are being extensively deployed and are expected to expand at significant rates in the coming years. They typically generate a large volume of data on the internet of things (IoT) application areas like smart cities, intelligent traffic systems, smart grid, and e-health. Cloud, edge and fog computing are potential and competitive strategies for collecting, processing, and distributing IoT data. However, cloud, edge, and fog-based solutions need to tackle the distribution of a high volume of IoT data efficiently through constrained and limited resource network infrastructures. This paper addresses the issue of conveying a massive volume of IoT data through a network with limited communications resources (bandwidth) using a cognitive communications resource allocation based on Reinforcement Learning (RL) with SARSA algorithm. The proposed network infrastructure (PSIoTRL) uses a Publish/ Subscribe architecture to access massive and highly distributed IoT data. It is demonstrated that the PSIoTRL bandwidth allocation for buffer flushing based on SARSA enhances the IoT aggregator buffer occupation and network link utilization. The PSIoTRL dynamically adapts the IoT aggregator traffic flushing according to the Pub/Sub topic's priority and network constraint requirements.

Federated Persistent Data Repository Approach for FIBRE multi-CMF Testbed

Federated Persistent Data Repository Approach for FIBRE multi-CMF Testbed: A Network for Experimentation (NfExp) is typically a regional, national, or specialized international testbed like GENI, PlanetLab, and OFELIA that are developed to support the experimentation of new protocols, services and applications mostly in the context of Future Internet (FI). In effect, a Network for Experimentation allows an experimenter to configure, instantiate, run, and collect measurements of distributed experiments on top of a real testbed managed by a Control and Monitoring Framework (CMF). Currently available CMFs developments are directly or indirectly service-oriented architectures focused, as an example, on wired or wireless networks research domains. A new approach for the Network for Experimentation considered in this paper is the FIBRE multi-CMF testbed. In FIBRE, various existing CMFs are integrated to achieve a broader set of supported applications and service domains. Among the technical challenges involved in the multi-CMF approach, this paper describes the approach adopted for the persistent data repository necessary to store the monitored and collected experimental data.  An iRODS-based federated monitoring persistent data repository proposal is presented for the FIBRE multi-CMF testbed. The solution adopts a standardized monitoring data format and representation whenever possible. It is a transparent data storage facility among multiple native DBMS, with persistent monitoring data access and retrieval, and a high-level monitoring data integration.

Network Self-Management Pseudo-Predictability based on Case-Based Reasoning

Network Self-Management Pseudo-Predictability based on Case-Based Reasoning: Network self-management, among other objectives, looks for solutions (systems, frameworks and/or strategies) in which the human intervention is drastically reduced in the analysis and planning of new network states, which in turn, is based on a set of SLAs (Service Level Agreement) definitions and traffic profile. The self-management system/framework has to find a solution meeting SLA and traffic requirements within a reasonable computational time (execution time) in order to achieve a near real time operation. In general, it is necessary to adopt approaches based on reasoning and learning in self-management systems in order to avoid and/or reduce human intervention [1]. As such, self-management systems/frameworks do require the storage of network states. In this context, it is important to identify critical states and, if possible, to predict when they will occur in order to facilitate the self-management process. In this paper, a proposal for pseudo-predictability based on Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) is presented. The pseudo-predictability CBR method considers previous network states to infer future network state scenario. It was developed for the self-management framework defined in [2] and, in general, further promotes the scalability of self-managed systems.

Avaliação de Protocolos Multicast

Avaliação de Protocolos Multicast: With the development of new computer network applications based on TCP/IP protocols we need to improve the performance of these protocols to match the new application demands. In order to provide these enhancements, research and developments on TCP/IP is under way for new mechanisms to reduce the use of bandwidth as much as possible. Accordingly, a new concept called multicast traffic has been developed to transmit data from one location to many others. This paper evaluates some multicast protocols that are being developed currently with respect to the routing mechanism focusing on the average delay time, the behavior of the routing tables, the use and overloading of the links. This allows to choose the most adequate protocol given the requirements of each topology of the network and the resources available.

A Tradeoff Approach for the Scalability Issue in Large Self-Managed Networks

A Tradeoff Approach for the Scalability Issue in Large Self-Managed Networks: Autonomic systems for network management are available and present significant benefits such as the reduction of human intervention, performance improvement and optimization of available resources. However, large networks composed by hundreds of nodes (routers) present a challenging scalability issue in relation to the development and implementation of self-management solutions. In effect, computational complexity required for autonomic solutions increases with network size resulting, typically, in unacceptable response time for an effective near real-time set of management action implementations. Alternatives that may be explored to deal with the scalability problem include the increase of computational resources supporting the autonomic management solution and the reduction of managed network size and, consequently, computational complexity. The first approach is realizable but implies, typically, in a significant cost increase for the autonomic solution. The reduction of managed network size, whenever realized preserving the quality of the overall autonomic solution, may represent an important tradeoff for managers in the direction of realizable and affordable autonomic management solutions. This paper proposes the systematic use of two parameters, robustness and performability, to deal with the scalability issue in large self-managed networks. These parameters will support managers in implementing self-management solutions by considering the tradeoff between solution's quality and execution time. Robustness and performability are,%...

A Methodological Approach for Multi-Service DSTE Network Performance Evaluation under Bandwidth Allocation Methods and Path Selection Constraints

A Methodological Approach for Multi-Service DSTE Network Performance Evaluation under Bandwidth Allocation Methods and Path Selection Constraints: Path selection and bandwidth management have a number of different routing protocols (CSPF, OSPF, other), bandwidth allocation models (BAMs) and overall implementation approaches like RDM (Russian Doll Model) , Adapt-RDM, GRDM (Generalized Russian Dolls Model) and AllocTC-sharing that can be used in the context of a multiservice DS-TE (DiffServ Aware - MPLS Traffic Engineering) network.  This paper initially identifies the path selection and bandwidth allocation model (BAM) solutions currently used. Subsequently, it proposes a generic performance evaluation methodology in order to deal with the modeling and implementation scenarios resulting from different routing protocols and BAM options available. The focus adopted is, fundamentally, to provide managers with a methodological approach consisting of a set of steps that can be used to deal with the issues such as network configuration and performance evaluation in the context of multi-service DS-TE networks under BAM constraints. It is expected that the proposed methodological approach could reduce the inherent difficulties found by managers in dealing with BAM model application in multi-service DS-TE networks.

Uma Estratégia Cognitiva de Recuperação de Redes Elétricas no Contexto do Smart Grid

Uma Estratégia Cognitiva de Recuperação de Redes Elétricas no Contexto do Smart Grid: Electrical Power Supply Distribution Networks have become very attractive due to automation process and electronic devices incorporation, which allows distance maneuvers. The reconguration process consists of changing distribution network topology by closing or opening interconnection keys. Also, such process focuses on supporting decision making, planning and/or real-time control of electric network operation aiming to minimizing active power losses, load balancing, fault isolation, voltage level improvements and maintaining continuity of user services. The task of managing and taking decisions to change the electrical network topology is a complex task due to the diversity of conguration possibilities. In this context, Autonomic Management Systems (AMS) are being investigated as a feasible solution to the grid reconguration problem. Thus, we expect that management human intervention can be replaced by autonomic solutions, preferably, dynamically generated. This thesis proposes the use of Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) coupled with HATSGA algorithm for the fast reconguration of large distribution power networks. The suitability and the scalability of the CBR-based reconguration strategy using HATSGA algorithm are evaluated. The evaluation indicates that the adopted HATSGA algorithm computes new reconguration topologies with a feasible computational time for large networks. The CBR strategy looks for managerial acceptable reconguration solutions at the CBR database and, as such, contributes to reduce the computational time of rec...

Mapping from a Human Autonomic System to a Bio-Inspired Autonomic Computing Model

Mapping from a Human Autonomic System to a Bio-Inspired Autonomic Computing Model: Although inspired by the biological aspect, the concept of autonomic computing is emblematic of the diversity of solutions that propose a self-governance of systems from high-level objectives. From the human point of view, the autonomic nervous system has as a central point the direct intervention of a small region of the brain called the hypothalamus. This article seeks to discuss the concept of computational autonomy from an analysis of the human autonomic system, addressing its internal functioning, in order to propose a correlated computational model that can be applied. Finally, the bio-inspired computational model is mapped to an approach for knowledge-based systems aimed at its applicability.

Uma Estratégia de Acesso a Conteúdos Educacionais Embarcados em Transporte Público de Massa com Bus-Learning

Uma Estratégia de Acesso a Conteúdos Educacionais Embarcados em Transporte Público de Massa com Bus-Learning: Distance Learning, Lifelong Learning (LLL), E-Learning, Continuous Education and Mobile Learning (M-Learning) are new educational strategies which, under the learner and teacher perspectives, look for providing both technological and pedagogical approaches towards the realization and improvement of the learning process in actual scenarios in which actors and educational resources are potentially highly distributed in space and time. Some new technological solutions are enablers that support these learning strategies and, potentially, make use of new paradigms like mobility, ubiquity, pervasive computing, high capacity broadband access and low cost wireless technologies, among others. This paper proposes a specific architecture and technology setup for educational content distribution in public transportation buses, briefly referred as “Bus-Learning”. The solution is intended to support a mobile learning approach (M-Learning) and is based on Bluetooth, electronic automated bus billing systems and bus-TV infrastructure which are becoming highly available in public mass transportation systems in cities due to the increasingly pervasive aspect of technology penetration in our societies. The main objective is to support a specific group and type of mobile users in accessing educational content with low cost, enhanced ergonomics and some additional advantages in relation to some \textit{M-Learning} approaches that are typically based on tablets, handheld computers and other sophisticated appliances requiring near-...

A Electric Network Reconfiguration Strategy with Case-Based Reasoning for the Smart Grid

A Electric Network Reconfiguration Strategy with Case-Based Reasoning for the Smart Grid: The complexity, heterogeneity and scale of electrical networks have grown far beyond the limits of exclusively human-based management at the Smart Grid (SG). Likewise, researchers cogitate the use of artificial intelligence and heuristics techniques to create cognitive and autonomic management tools that aim better assist and enhance SG management processes like in the grid reconfiguration. The development of self-healing management approaches towards a cognitive and autonomic distribution power network reconfiguration is a scenario in which the scalability and on-the-fly computation are issues. This paper proposes the use of Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) coupled with the HATSGA algorithm for the fast reconfiguration of large distribution power networks. The suitability and the scalability of the CBR-based reconfiguration strategy using HATSGA algorithm are evaluated. The evaluation indicates that the adopted HATSGA algorithm computes new reconfiguration topologies with a feasible computational time for large networks. The CBR strategy looks for managerial acceptable reconfiguration solutions at the CBR database and, as such, contributes to reduce the required number of reconfiguration computation using HATSGA. This suggests CBR can be applied with a fast reconfiguration algorithm resulting in more efficient, dynamic and cognitive grid recovery strategy.

A Pub/Sub SDN-Integrated Framework for IoT Traffic Orchestration

A Pub/Sub SDN-Integrated Framework for IoT Traffic Orchestration: The Internet of Things (IoT) is advancing and the adoption of internet-connected devices in everyday use is constantly growing. This increase not only affects the traffic from other sources in the network, but also the communication quality requirements, like Quality of Service (QoS), for the IoT devices and applications. With the rise of dynamic network management and dynamic network programming technologies like Software-Defined Networking (SDN), traffic management and communication quality requirements can be tailored to fit niche use cases and characteristics. We propose a publish/subscribe QoS-aware framework (PSIoT-SDN) that orchestrates IoT traffic and mediates the allocation of network resources between IoT data aggregators and pub/sub consumers. The PSIoT framework allows edge-level QoS control using the features of publish/ subscribe orchestrator at IoT aggregators and, in addition, allows network-level QoS control by incorporating SDN features coupled with a bandwidth allocation model for network-wide IoT traffic management. The integration of the framework with SDN allows it to dynamically react to bandwidth sharing enabled by the SDN controller, resulting in better bandwidth distribution and higher link utilization for IoT traffic.

Towards Smart City Innovation under the Perspective of Software-Defined Networking, Artificial Intelligence and Big Data

Towards Smart City Innovation under the Perspective of Software-Defined Networking, Artificial Intelligence and Big Data: Smart city projects address many of the current problems afflicting high populated areas and cities and, as such, are a target for government, institutions and private organizations that plan to explore its foreseen advantages. In technical terms, smart city projects present a complex set of requirements including a large number users with highly different and heterogeneous requirements. In this scenario, this paper proposes and analyses the impact and perspectives on adopting software-defined networking and artificial intelligence as innovative approaches for smart city project development and deployment. Big data is also considered as an inherent element of most smart city project that must be tackled. A framework  layered view is proposed with a discussion about software-defined networking and machine learning impacts on innovation followed by a use case that demonstrates the potential benefits of cognitive learning for smart cities. It is argued that the complexity of smart city projects do require new innovative approaches that potentially result in more efficient and intelligent systems.

Ambiente de Gerência Autônoma de Redes para a Qualidade de Serviço: The need to keep assured quality of service levels in complex networks is a challenging process in network management area. In such a scenario, it becomes important to identify and specify a network management structure focusing on autonomous network administration that, by definition, will reduce human intervention in the process and will promote automatic network operations and management. The Autonomous Network Management Framework (AGA), proposed in this paper, supports autonomous management. Its implementation articulates network management planes and uses genetic algorithms in order to identify heuristics to provide solutions to network utilization, routing and packet scheduling focusing on autonomous management.

Avaliação Experimental da Utilização da Estratégia de Redes Ativas para o Suporte da Qualidade de Serviço no Contexto de Aplicações Multimídia

Avaliação Experimental da Utilização da Estratégia de Redes Ativas para o Suporte da Qualidade de Serviço no Contexto de Aplicações Multimídia: The active networking paradigm corresponds to an initiative including projects, developments and implementations searching for a new communication concept/ paradigm allowing fast, safe and efficient communications. The basic target is to provide, among other features and services, the management and configuration of new and complex network services and equipment (backbones), supporting dynamically the quality of service (QoS) needs of the new multimedia applications, so often pointed as the trend in the web world. This paper evaluates experimentally and objectively the usability of a specific active networking implementation architecture (ANTS) focusing on the dynamic configuration of backbone routers for supporting QoS in a multimedia applications scenario. The paper describes the evaluated architecture, proposes two implementation scenarios and evaluates experimentally their use for dynamic routers configuration.

A Publish/Subscribe QoS-aware Framework for Massive IoT Traffic Orchestration

A Publish/Subscribe QoS-aware Framework for Massive IoT Traffic Orchestration: Internet of Things (IoT) application deployment requires the allocation of resources such as virtual machines, storage, and network elements that must be deployed over distinct infrastructures such as cloud computing, Cloud of Things (CoT), datacenters and backbone networks. For massive IoT data acquisition, a gateway-based data aggregation approach is commonly used featuring sensor/ actuator seamless access and providing cache/ buffering and preprocessing functionality. In this perspective, gateways acting as producers need to allocate network resources to send IoT data to consumers. In this paper, it is proposed a Publish/Subscribe (PubSub) quality of service (QoS) aware framework (PSIoT-Orch) that orchestrates IoT traffic and allocates network resources between aggregates and consumers for massive IoT traffic. PSIoT-Orch schedules IoT data flows based on its configured QoS requirements. Additionally,  the framework allocates network resources (LSP/ bandwidth) over a controlled backbone network with limited and constrained resources between IoT data users and consumers. Network resources are allocated using a Bandwidth Allocation Model (BAM) to achieve efficient network resource allocation for scheduled IoT data streams. PSIoT-Orch adopts an ICN (Information-Centric Network) PubSub architecture approach to handle IoT data transfers requests among framework components. The proposed framework aims at gathering the inherent advantages of an ICN-centric approach using a PubSub message scheme while allocating resources efficiently keeping QoS awareness and handling restricted network resources (bandwidth) for massive IoT traffic.
